A contracted mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Westmoreland County faces federal charges for theft of mail from a Greensburg-area resident last summer.

Dale R. McIntyre, 52, of Latrobe, was named in the one-count indictment returned last week by a grand jury in U.S. District Court, Pittsburgh, acting U.S. Attorney Soo C. Song said in a release.

According to the indictment, McIntyre, a contract driver for the postal service, opened mail he was to deliver on July 17 and stole a $50 Kmart gift card.

The law provides for a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service conducted the investigation leading to the indictment, Song said.
