GASTONIA, N.C. — Gastonia police detectives are teaming up with federal postal inspectors after thieves broke into a local post office over the weekend and stole $20,000 in cash.
Gastonia Police said sometime around Friday night into Saturday morning, someone broke into the post office on South New Hope Road, stealing three bags of cash and causing $200 worth of damage.
Investigators have no suspects yet.
The crime comes a few weeks after a suspect stole a bag of mail off the loading dock of the West Main Avenue post office.
Police said they have no suspects in that case either.
“I’m just really upset that it’s getting to the point that people have no respect for other people,” Sylvia Lovingood, a post office customer, said. “They don’t have a limit on where they’re going nowadays.”
Anyone with information on the two cases can call the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455 or Gaston County Crime Stoppers at 704-861-8000.
