Thieves broke into NC post office, stole $20,000 in cash

December 6, 2017

GASTONIA, N.C. — Gastonia police detectives are teaming up with federal postal inspectors after thieves broke into a local post office over the weekend and stole $20,000 in cash.

Gastonia Police said sometime around Friday night into Saturday morning, someone broke into the post office on South New Hope Road, stealing three bags of cash and causing $200 worth of damage.

Investigators have no suspects yet.

The crime comes a few weeks after a suspect stole a bag of mail off the loading dock of the West Main Avenue post office.

Police said they have no suspects in that case either.

“I’m just really upset that it’s getting to the point that people have no respect for other people,” Sylvia Lovingood, a post office customer, said. “They don’t have a limit on where they’re going nowadays.”

Anyone with information on the two cases can call the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455 or Gaston County Crime Stoppers at 704-861-8000.

I would check insiders first.. dont they keep cash like that ain a safe?

Nancy Oster-Bubel

I was thinking the same. Isn’t everything in a safe?

Charlotte DeZern Daniels

They’re supposed to.

Vickie Tidwell Votaw

That’s insane!

Wendy Lewis Stagner

That’s interesting. They are not to have over a certain amount of cash in the office. Must be a big office with several clerks. Don’t know how they got the safe open.

Roseland Pete

The pic doesn’t look like a big office. Sounds like an inside job to me.

Joy Scarborough

Why was cash accessible? It was in the vault before I closed up in my office.

Gena Arney

Why do they have that much cash on hand over night…

Melinda Thompson

All our offices keep cash overnite now and have for years since they closed our plant. They deliver and pick up our dispatch before noon everyday. So our deposit from the day before is kept in office overnite. In a safe if one is in the office. Some offices don’t have safes so they used a file cabinet with locks. Smh

Gena Arney

We send our deposit in everyday in a register bag…

Melinda Thompson

Yes we do too the next day.

Kathy Williams Marlow

That’s a lot of cash in a PO.

Jamie Nielsen Deiss

We have a safe room with a giant metal door and in there is a giant metal safe. I assumed all offices had the same. How careless if not.

JoAnn Morrow

Was the drawer left out???

No burglar alarm?
