A teenager suspected of trying to rob a letter carrier at gunpoint and steal his truck was arrested Saturday in the Skyline neighborhood of San Diego, police said.
The 15-year-old found out he couldn’t drive the U.S. Postal Service truck, so he ran down the street and tried to rob a man of his cellphone, Officer Robert Heims said.
Officers caught the youth and discovered that the pistol was a replica firearm.
It all happened shortly after 2 p.m. when a group of teenagers were together on 68th Street near Madrone Avenue. The 15-year-old walked away from the group, walked up to the Postal Service worker and pointed a gun at him, Heims said.
He said the youth demanded the letter carrier’s wallet and cellphone, but the victim said he didn’t have them. Then the boy ordered the man out of the postal truck and tried to drive it away, but failed at that too.
