Postal worker, a ‘friend to everybody,’ retires after nearly 50 years on the job in Waukegan

Leroy Presley has been weaving a thread in the city of Waukegan’s fabric by delivering mail to its residents for the Waukegan Post Office for nearly half a century.

On Monday, after 49 years of service, Presley will put on the blue uniform one last time before moving on to a new phase in his life that he’s looking forward to — retirement.

What the 68-year-old Waukegan resident will miss the most from his long career are the friendships he’s developed with the people at the agencies, businesses and homes he’s delivered to for so many years, he said.

Beginning his career in 1970 as a door-to-door mail carrier in a route on the south side, Presley went on to become a special delivery driver after 30 years, shifting his work to transporting mail and packages to mostly businesses and agencies.
