Horse medication on bag of packages prompts post-office evacuation

(Sept. 9, 2019: Update 3:26 p.m.) Police, firefighters and a hazardous-materials response team were called to the U.S. Post Office’s Old South Road annex near Nantucket Memorial Airport this morning after several employees reported not feeling well.

The building was evacuated and a state hazardous-materials investigation team determined that a white, powdery substance on a bag of packages reported by the employees was some type of horse medication.

“At 8:53 a.m., Nantucket central dispatch received a call from the Nantucket postmaster that a bag containing packages had a white powdery substance on them and two workers were effected.The Nantucket Police Department, Massachusetts State Police and Nantucket Fire Department responded,” Nantucket police Lt. Angus MacVicar wrote in a press release.
