Driver charged in crash that killed postal worker

GUN PLAIN TWP. — The Allegan County Prosecutor’s Office has brought charges against the driver who police say rear-ended a U.S. Postal Service vehicle in January, killing a postal worker.

Spencer Baird, 36, a Plainwell-area resident, has been charged with committing a moving violation causing death, a misdemeanor. He was arraigned Wednesday, March 4, in Allegan County District Court.

The postal worker, Sheila Rackley, 55, was stopped at a mailbox on 10th Street near Carrie Avenue to deliver mail when her truck was hit on Jan. 6.

The Sheriff’s Office said its investigation found a male driving a southbound pickup truck struck the postal vehicle.

When emergency responders arrived, the USPS vehicle was in a roadside ditch and engulfed in flames. Rackley was found in the vehicle after the fire was extinguished and pronounced dead at the scene.

Capt. Chris Kuhn of the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office said Baird may have dozed off, causing the crash.
