A Chicago mail handler is celebrating 50 years as a postal employee.
“It is truly a blessing to work at the world’s greatest Post Office,” said Bessie Flemons, who is based at the Chicago Processing and Distribution Center.
She has some words of wisdom for those following in her footsteps.
“The advice I would pass on to the younger employees is to come to work, to work whenever you are scheduled and to be on time,” Flemons said. “Remember to keep a pleasant attitude, be mindful of the work you do and remember that it’s the customer you are working for.”
Flemons’ co-workers admire the example she’s set for others over the decades.
“Bessie is honest, flexible and comes ready to work every day,” said Data Collection Technician Darcel Johnson. “She is a great asset to this organization.”
Distribution Operations Supervisor Willie Johnson said the “most important thing” he learned from Flemons is to always stay positive. “She said that is the key to having a good postal career and good life. She always has a can-do attitude at work.”
Despite a half-century of service, Flemons isn’t ready to retire.
“It is my intention to be around for a while. I have always loved my job, and I do give my best every day,” she said.
