Neighbors credit driver for saving packages after mail truck goes up in flames

SPRING HILL, Fla. (WFLA) – Dramatic video shows a United States Postal Service truck on fire in Spring Hill Sunday afternoon.

Residents tell News Channel 8 they were shocked when they looked outside and saw fire shooting into the air.

They called 911 around 2:45 p.m. Sunday when the truck burst into flames along Matheson Avenue.

“I stop down the corner and I see the flames coming out,” said Felipe Vacques who was visiting family members in the neighborhood.

Real estate agent Kim Whalen of Tropic Shores Realty was showing a home in the neighborhood and said she witnessed the unidentified driver working to remove the packages from the truck.  Whalen shot video of the fire.

Neighbors commended that driver for her quick actions.

“She’s a hero,” said Ralph, who didn’t want to give his last name.  “People wouldn’t be getting their mail.  The girl emptied out the truck by herself,” he said.

An official with the Hernando County Fire Rescue Department said on scene crews reported that the fire started in the engine compartment.
